I recently found a pile of pictures from my son’s first birthday. Everything looked so nice and simple, but simple it was NOT. If planning the “perfect first birthday” is every parent’s dream. Planning a long distance first birthday/Christening turned out to be this parent’s nightmare.
I went to several stores buying the “must haves” piece by piece for the party. Decorations, theme birthday plates, cups and napkins. The all-in-one party packages were not gonna cut it. They were expensive and forced you to buy pieces you didn’t need. The goodie bags were another story. I had no idea what to include. We had friends and family with children from a few weeks old to 12.What could I put in these bags that would work with a range of ages? Back to the store I went. It became an obsession. What I couldn’t find in person I took the chance and ordered online. We received a few things after the party. I spent entirely too much time and energy stressing random things right up until the day before his birthday party.
Looking back I wish I had not stressed it. The day was about celebrating my beautiful boy wasn’t it? When did planning a 1 year-old’s party become like planning a quinceañera.
I grew up having simple birthdays that started with my mom blasting “Las Mañanitas” by Vicente Fernandez on a handheld tape deck first thing in the morning and sometimes ended WITHOUT a big party. They were happy nonetheless. We didn’t seem to need very much, just other children, space to run and cake. That is what I wanted to recreate for his first birthday.
The night before his party, which happened to be right after his Christening, I totally gave in to the exhaustion of traveling and last minute must haves. I decided the day would be great because our son would be surrounded by family and friends who love him and did all they could to assist.
And just like magic, it all came together. The place looked great (until the first 2 kids arrived and tore the decorations down). The kids had so much fun. The food was delicious and our baby was celebrated like the little king he is. At one point I stood in the doorway and looked at all the people mingling, the kids playing, music going and thought “we did it!”.
It would’ve been nice if all this planning could be done in one place. It’s a lot to keep track of. If you’re planning a 1st Birthday, my headache doesn’t have to be yours. Save time and stress. How you ask?
