Mami’s Favorite Things: Maiden Nation

11/27/12 | My Life

It’s #GivingTuesday and so my favorite thing is a way to be fashionable AND give back. What better combination, right?

I adore finding causes that help those in need. I told you about Heart of Haiti earlier this year. Ya’ll know how much I love them.

Well, Everywhere has now introduced me to Maiden Nation. So, I guess I have two favorite things on today’s post. One, I love Everywhere for taking this cause pro bono and two, I love Maiden Nation. Why you ask?

How cool is this concept:  Maiden designers are encouraged to showcase their work, Maiden activists to share their causes and Maiden citizens to connect over their ideas and goals.MN-logo-horizontal

The Chan Luu ‘Kiss Kiss Bracelet’ is created by members of the Hands Together Cooperative in Haiti. Being from the Dominican Republic, I have a very special place in my heart for my brothers and sisters on the other side of the island. Anything that supports their growth, I support.

The name Kiss Kiss was inspired by the customary Haitian greeting of giving a kiss on each cheek.  How cute is that?

Each purchase of a ‘Kiss Kiss Bracelet’ will help the survivors of the 2010 earthquake build a new life by supporting this new business. Maiden Nation is also proud to have a group of powerful allies.  More than $6 from the purchase price of each bracelet will be donated to J/P Haitian Relief Organization to support community development in Haiti.  It’s so good to hear of an organization that is still working hard to help the people of Haiti two years after the earthquake. I hope they feel that they are not forgotten.

Maiden Nation has created a marketplace where items are designed with both beauty and social consciousness in mind, and profits are reinvested into women’s entrepreneurship projects.  The marketplace features ethically sourced jewelry from “of-the-moment” women designers all over the world, including Rwanda, Argentina, Poland, South Africa, Ethiopia, Colombia, Kenya, and the United States.

This is why Maiden Nation is one of my favorite things. Now, who wants a Kiss Kiss bracelet?

Disclosure: I was given a Kiss Kiss bracelet to test my love for all artisan things. And I passed. All opinions, feelings and heartfelt need to help the women of Haiti are purely my own.

  • #TBT to when I got my first taste of purple. Get ready because the purple might make a comeback in 2020. Ima need @crownpaint_colors to make a 20lb jar for me...lol 😁 #PurpleHair
  • The Frog Princess loves crystals. She's had the 2 hearts tucked under her pillow these last 2 days she's been under the weather. I'd been holding on to the hematite for a minute and just gave it to her.

Whenever I used to travel west, I would find crystal hearts at the airports. It became a thing for a while. Since then, we've upgraded to our crystal dealer, @homegirlporvida. I've tasked baby girl with taking inventory of her crystals while she is home with the flu to give us something fun and creative to focus on. Here's hoping for a super speedy recovery. #putitintheuniverse #FrogPrincess #MagicalGirl
  • This is not a drill! Baby girl has the flu. 😷

Time to grab chicken soup ingredients, more honey for my aloe concoction, ice cream for my immune system and the Tamiflu script. 🎶Just another day, living I'm the 'hood. Just another day around the way.🎵 #Mamihood
  • I'm on defcon 3. What should've been a fun "Frog Princess and Mami" day has turned into a fever watch and nap day. It seems like it's just a passing cold but, my guard doesn't go down until the fever is all the way gone.

Thankfully, all has been quiet. Though it has been 2+ years since her last #febrileseizure, I'm still on high alert. #Mamihood
  • When I learned about @openbookfoundation I was in awe! Their mission? To bridge the literacy gap amongst low-income elementary schools. To date, 200,000 books have been donated to elementary schools.
When they pinged me about a giveaway of @michelleobama's book, I wasn't sure what I would do. Then, all of a sudden it hit me! Who is my favoritest teacher that continually amazes me?! So today, I'd like to say a great big thanks to the foundation for providing me with a gift card to be able to provide 5 copies of Becoming to the student library of @hustlesway. Kymberli, thank you for all you do. Your student library is just what the kids need and exactly what we need to see out in this world. You are changing lives and the impact on our future is apparent! Happy reading to your students! #BecauseofHer #MamiReads #TeachersRock #letsreads
