Practical exercise “My Parenting Self”

The goal – realization of the state of “I am a parent.

Instruction. The leader should explain that the parental “I” is a condition adopted in childhood from parents or those who replaced them. The parent carries mainly orders, prohibitions and rules. In life situations, the parental “I” turns on almost automatically.

There are two sides of the parental “I”:

  • controlling, authoritarian;
  • helpful, affectionate.

Physical signs of the controlling side of the parental self: frowning forehead; shaking head; pointing gesture; hands on hips; clicking tongue. Physical signs of the helping parent: affectionate gaze; stroking; supportive gestures.

Parents should picture their parental self in the form of a circle divided into two parts so that one reflects the controlling side of the self and the other the helping side. It is up to the parent to decide what the ratio of the parts is.
